December has a way of arriving faster than expected and leaving even faster. Before the year closes, a few health-related tasks are worth putting on your list — not as obligations, but as investments in the year ahead. Use Your Remaining Benefits If you have health insurance, most benefits reset on January 1. That means any progress toward your deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, or flexible spending account balance may not carry over. Check your deductible status: If you've already met your deductible for the year, remaining months may represent your best opportunity to schedule care at the lowest out-of-pocket cost. Procedures, specialist visits, or labs you've been putting off may be worth scheduling now. Spend down your FSA: Flexible Spending Account funds often expire at year-end or shortly after (some plans allow a short grace period or rollover of a limited amount). Check your balance and, if you have remaining funds, consider what qualified expenses you can use them for. Confirm your HSA contributions: If you have an HSA, confirm you've contributed at levels that make sense for your situation. Contributions can be made until the tax filing deadline for the prior year. Schedule Anything You've Been Postponing Most of us have something health-related we've been meaning to get to. An annual wellness visit. A follow-up we scheduled and then didn't schedule. A conversation with our doctor about something we've been putting off. Year-end is a practical prompt to simply get it on the calendar. Reflect on the Year's Health Habits Before the new year brings the usual flood of resolution-making, a realistic look back can be more useful than an idealized look forward. What went well in terms of your health this year? What did you intend to do that didn't happen? What one or two things, if you did them consistently, would make the biggest difference? Better answers to these questions come from honest reflection, not from ambient new-year optimism. Look Ahead to Next Year's Benefits If you're enrolled in a new health plan starting January 1, take a few minutes to understand what changes, if anything: your deductible, your covered medications, your in-network providers. If you're considering a change like adding a DPC membership, the new year is a natural starting point. A Final Note Healthcare is often something we deal with reactively — when something goes wrong, when something hurts, when we can no longer ignore it. Year-end is one of those rare natural checkpoints to be a little more proactive. Use it. We hope this past year's posts have been useful — and we're looking forward to continuing this conversation in the year ahead.
